(Atlantic) Clarinda and Atlantic split in a doubleheader softball game at Atlantic on Tuesday night.
The Cardinals broke a 1-1 tie in the top of the fifth and held on in the bottom of the seventh for a 6-4 victory. The Trojans rallied back in the nightcap with an 11-1 win in five innings.
The Cardinals jumped ahead 1-0 in the top of the first inning in game one on lead-off batter Jerzee Knight’s walk and scored on Annika Price’s RBI double. The Trojans answered in the bottom of the third inning. Riley Wood belted a single, and Zoey Kirchhoff laced a single, driving Wood home to tie the game at 1-1.
The Cardinals broke the tie with five runs on five hits in the top of the fifth inning. The visitors sent nine hitters to the plate. Knight, Maddie Cole, Price, Isaacson, and Addison Wagner each stroked singles. Knight drove in two runs, and Isaacson drove another to push the score to 6-1. The Trojans made the game interesting in the bottom of the seventh, scoring three runs on two hits, closing the gap to 6-4 before a fly ball to right field ended Atlantic’s hopes for a comeback win. Lila Wiederstein smashed a 2 RBI double, and McKenna Sonntag hit a single to lead the Trojans in the bottom of the seventh.
The Cardinals scored six runs on nine hits. Annika Price led Clarinda at the plate with an RBI double and two singles. The Trojans scored four runs on 11 hits. Riley Wood, Lila Wiederstein, and Jillian Saathoff led the Trojans at the plate with two hits each.
Mallory Woods took the win for the Cardinals, striking out two batters with one walk. Zoey Kirchhoff took the loss for the Trojans.
Atlantic dominated game two, winning 11-1 in five innings. Riley Wood pitched the win, allowing one run on four hits while striking out three, one walk, and one hit batter. The Trojans scored 11 runs on nine hits and played solid defense with no errors. They plated one run in the first inning, two in the second, and broke open the game in the third with four runs on four hits, sending ten hitters to the plate. Kirchhoff stroked a single, Saathoff laced an RBI double, Schroder rapped a single, and Makayla Atkinson tagged an RBI single to lead the Trojans. The home team scored two more in the fourth and sealed the deal when Pellett and Wiederstein scored for the Trojans in the bottom of the fifth.
Zoey Kirchhoff led the team at the plate with three singles and one RBI. Claire Schroder went two for three, Saathoff hit a double, and Claire Pellett, Lila Wiederstein, and Makayla Atkinson each hit singles.
The Trojans, now 4-2, travel to Kuemper on Wednesday, at Audubon on Thursday, host Estherville-Lincoln Central and Carlisle on Friday, and host their tournament on Saturday.
Clarinda, 5-2, hosts Red Oak on Wednesday and plays in the Murray Tournament on Friday and Saturday.
