(Iowa City, IA) – After a slow-moving first quarter, the Hawkeyes came alive and continued knocking down threes to beat the Hoosiers 84-57. This is the fifth win for the Hawkeyes in the last six games against the Hoosiers.
Despite missing six three-pointers in the first quarter, Caitlin Clark led the Hawkeyes in scoring with 30 points on the night as she went 10-21 from the field and 6-16 from beyond the arc. The superstar also dished out 11 assists for her 52nd double-double in a career as she leads active Big Ten players overall. She now has 53 career games with 25+ points, 5+ assists, and 5+ rebounds which still marks an NCAA best. Behind Clark was Molly Davis who knocked down 18 points and went 7-10 from the field for her season-high in scoring while putting down one of her best performances in her career. Gabbie Marshall put down 12 points on the night while going 4-7 from the three-point line as all of her points came on threes. Last but not least was Kate Martin who continued to look good in the game with 10 points and 12 rebounds for a double-double. Martin has now scored at least 10 points in the last 11 of 13 games. With 10 points tonight, Martin has now moved up into the 1,000 point club in her career with the Hawkeyes.
Indiana was led by Mackenzie Holmes who knocked down 16 points as she went 6-13 from the field while going 4-9 from the charity stripe. Yarden Garzon followed up in scoring with 11 points and four rebounds while Sydney Parrish went 4-8 from the field and put down 11 points, pulled in six boards, and also swiped away five steals. Indiana was limited to just 35% (5-20) from the perimeter while the Hoosiers went just 42.6% from the field. On the other hand, Iowa shot 49.2% from the hardwood while shooting 41.7% from the three-point line as the Hawkeyes went 15-36 from the arc.
Iowa outscored the Hoosiers in points off turnovers 16-11 and in fast break points 15-8. The Hawkeyes also outrebounded the Hoosiers 37-28. While Iowa led in most categories, the Hoosiers led the game in steals on the night with an 8-4 advantage. With the win tonight, Iowa has now won 14 straight games this season and is currently 7-1 in games played at Carver-Hawkeye Arena. Also with a win for Iowa comes Indiana’s first loss in 14 straight games as they had a 13-game winning streak coming into the game tonight. Iowa currently sits at 17-1 on the season and 6-0 in Big Ten play, the best since 2003.
After the game, Caitlin Clark talked to Fox’s Allison Williams saying, “This started on the defensive end. To only give up 57 points to this team that’s really good offensively, I’m really proud of our group.”
Iowa will return to action this Tuesday, January 12th when they take on Wisconsin at home. The opening tipoff is set for 8:00 p.m.
