(Guthrie Center) Madrid linebacker Preston Wicker intercepted a tipped pass late in the fourth quarter to secure the victory for the Tigers over ACGC 21-14. Madrid advances to the semifinals with an 11-0 record.
The game started with exchanging possessions until late in the first quarter when Nash Ramirez ran it in from seven yards out to give Madrid a 7-0 lead following the extra point with 1:19 to play. The second quarter went scoreless, and the Tigers led ACGC at the break 7-0.
The Chargers turned the table in the third quarter with back-to-back scores. Madrid received the kickoff; however, the visitors coughed up the ball on the first play from scrimmage. ACGC took the momentum and ran with it, scoring back-to-back touchdowns. Charger fullback Mike Fuller scored from 18 and three yards out to give the Chargers a 14-7 advantage. Madrid fired right back with a drive consuming three minutes and fifty seconds. Preston Wicker polished off the drive with a five-yard run. Following the extra point, the Tigers evened the score at 14-14.
Madrid grabbed the lead for good with 8:01 to play on a Wicker to Jayce Fusion 18-yard TD strike. The extra point was good, giving the Tigers a 21-14 advantage with 8:01 left to play.
ACGC mounted a late game drive, however, that came to a halt with just under two minutes to play when Preston Wicker intercepted a tipped pass. The Tigers ran out the clock to secure the win and trip to the Class A semifinals.
ACGC’s outstanding season ended with a 10-1 record.
