(Atlantic) The Atlantic City Council will act on the first reading tonight on discontinuing the Parks and Recreation Board. The Council held a public hearing on August 2 and heard from several community members in favor of keeping the Parks and Recreation Board of Directors.
In July, the Atlantic City Council took action on a resolution creating the position of Parks and Recreation Coordinator and setting a public hearing date of August 2 regarding the dissolution of the Parks and Recreation Board. Three individuals spoke out against the changes. In an earlier statement Atlantic Mayor Grace Garrett said the Parks and Recreation Board is the only elected Board within the City out of nine committees. She said in the very beginning, the process and responsibilities of the Board were completely different than they are today.
The First Reading -Creating a Parks and Recreation Advisory Commission is also on the agenda. The commission would consist of five individuals, with at least three representatives residing in City Limits and allowing for two in Cass County. A sixth non-voting representative from the Atlantic Community School District’s High School would also serve.
The voting members, appointments would be staggered for two-year terms, with a January 1, 2024, start date. The School Representatives term would be for one year.
