(Winterset) Justin Hackett pitched a one-hitter to lead Winterset to a 10-0 shutout in five innings over Atlantic in a Class 3A Substate 8 baseball game at Winterset on Friday.
Hackett allowed only one base runner throughout the entire game. The TCU recruit allowed no runs on one hit, struck out twelve, and no walks, and garnered support from the offense’s 10 runs on 12 hits. Lane Nelson took the loss for the Trojans.
Winterset opened up a 6-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning. The home team sent 10-batters to the plate. Dawson Forgy slammed a bases-loaded double and drove home three runners. Will Heithoff singled and drove in Forgy and Jensen Kaldenberg’s sacrifice fly-plated Heithoff. Ty Thompson ended the scoring spree with an RBI single.
Hackett sailed along, retiring the first eight Trojan batters. Atlantic senior designated hitter Garrett Reynolds ended the string with a single up the middle, which would be the visitor’s only base runner of the game.
Will Heithoff blasted a solo home run over the left-center field fence to push Winterset’s lead to 7-0 through four innings. Hackett struck out six straight Trojan hitters in the fourth and fifth innings and received support from the offense with three runs on two hits in the bottom of the fifth. Forgy stroked a two-RBI single, and Ty Thompson belted a base hit, driving home the winning run from third base to seal the victory.
Will Heithoff homered and singled, Dawson Forgy smacked a double and a single and drove in five of the ten Winterset runs. Ty Thompson went 2-3 at the plate, and Jaden Van Pelt reached base on all three plate appearances, with two singles, and was hit by a pitch. Hunter Devine, Justin Hackett, Kaldenberg, and Hunter Farr each hit singles.
Winterset pushes their record to 20-11 and hosts Denison-Schleswig in a Substate semi-final on Monday night. Atlantic ends the season at 12-15.
