(Area) The Iowa DNR is adding fish habitat into area lakes.
Mormon Trail and Prairie Rose were two of the recent destinations for DNR crews. Fisheries Biologist Bryan Hayes says the ice was thick enough and the weather was nice enough to create a good opportunity to get some work done. “Simply cutting trees, dragging them with a UTV onto the ice, and then wiring cement blocks to them so they’ll sink and provide some fish habitat. It’s a really good way to do it on the ice.”
The trees will provide structure for fish to congregate in the water. “You’re concentrating the fish that are already there and making good spots to fish. If you’re interested in improving your catch and catching more fish you’ll seek out these locations.”
Hayes points out dragging habitat out onto the ice is a much simpler method than trying to maneuver trees on the front of a boat in open water.
