(Des Moines) An EMS funding bill unanimously passed the Iowa House this week.
Iowa House District 21 Representative Tom Moore said this bill provides more latitude for EMS district trustees to increase revenue in their district.
“Currently there is a cap on the tax that trustees can impose. This bill states that if the current taxation is not sufficient to provide EMS services; the trustees can propose an additional tax which would be voted on by residents of that district. This additional tax would go into effect with a majority of voters approving it, and that tax would continue each year unless 25% of eligible voters sign a petition to remove the tax. This would trigger a vote, and if a majority of voters opposed the tax it would be ended.”
Moore said the bill passed Tuesday with a vote of 91-0 with 9 individuals not voting.
