(Lewis) As camping season winds down, Iowa State Parks are preparing campgrounds for freezing winter weather.
Iowa Department of Natural Resources Fisheries Biologist John Lorenzen says parks are beginning to shut off water systems, close dump stations, and close shower houses.
Some campgrounds remain open throughout the winter, while others close completely. Lorenzen says campgrounds that stay open often switch to off-season rates starting October 16.
Campers planning to brave the colder weather should check campground availability before heading out. Lorenzen says visitors can call the park directly or check its status through the state’s online reservation system when booking a campsite.
Most state parks remain open during the winter, but Lake Manawa and Wilson Island will close for the season. Lake Anita will close November 1 for a sewer system upgrade, with work expected to finish by mid-April.
Other parks, including Viking Lake, Prairie Rose, and Springbrook, will remain open throughout the winter.
