(Audubon) Three representatives from Snowfox Discovery updated the Audubon County Board of Supervisors Tuesday on the company’s hydrogen exploration project.
Snowfox intends to use conventional oil and gas drilling techniques to extract natural hydrogen, which could then be used to produce anhydrous ammonia locally for area farmers.
Audubon County Supervisor Chairman Kent Grabil says the project could benefit Audubon County and area farmers. Grabil also explained that Snowfox now has enough aerial data and will not need to conduct seismic testing.
He says representatives are planning to build a test well in mid-to-late 2027.
Grabil says if hydrogen is found and a plant is built, there would be some hiring of local people as well.
Grabil added that for every cubic yard of hydrogen extracted, some money would be directed back to the county.
Grabil says the representatives will return for another update in late November.
So far, Snowfox has signed contracts in Audubon County covering about 10,000 acres.
Audubon County lies within a unique geological feature that stretches from Kansas through Nebraska, Iowa, Minnesota, Wisconsin and into Michigan. Snowfox officials say Iowa’s geological composition, along with multiple geological factors, must align for natural hydrogen to be present.
