(Des Moines) The National Weather Service has issued Flood Warnings for the East Nishnabotna River in Atlantic from Troublesome Creek near Atlantic to Indian Creek near Lewis from this Morning to late tonight. At 22.8 feet, water affects Lansing Road on both sides of the river.
At 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday night, the stage was 5.1 feet and rising. The river is expected to rise above flood stage this morning to a crest on 22 feet early this afternoon, and fall below flood stage late this evening.
The Flood stage is 19 feet. Minor flooding is forecast.
Additionally, a Flood Warning remains in effect for eastern Harrison and Shelby Counties until 1:00 p.m. this afternoon. At 2:55 a.m. this morning, Doppler radar indicated heavy rain associated with thunderstorms. Between three and five inches of rain have fallen in the warned area, with up to another inch of rainfall possible.
Flooding of rivers, creeks, streams, and other low-lying, flood-prone areas is imminent or already occurring.
Communities and areas that could experience flooding include Earling, Irwin, Defiance, Kirkman, Jacksonville, Prairie Rose State Park, Elk Horn Creek Recreation Area and Manteno Recreation Area.
Residents are reminded to turn around and avoid driving through flooded roads. Most flood deaths occur in vehicles.
Additionally, flood warnings are in effect for the west Nishnabotna River at Randolph, affecting Fremont and Mills Counties.
