(Atlantic) Iowa Democratic Gubernatorial Nominee Rob Sand continued his annual 100 Town Hall tour in Western Iowa today (August 20) and made a campaign stop at the Cass County Community Center in Atlantic.
Sand touched on numerous topics; one of them was his proposal for a “single primary.” His idea is to replace Iowa’s separate Democratic and Republican primaries with one primary election in which all candidates run together, regardless of party.
And the top four vote-getters would advance to the general election. Sand also supports approval voting, which would allow voters to support multiple candidates rather than choosing only one. His argument is that the current primary system gives disproportionate influence to the most partisan voters because only people participating in a party’s primary choose that party’s nominee.
Sand argues that a single primary could encourage candidates to appeal to a broader group of Iowa voters, rather than focusing primarily on their party’s base.
Rob Sand made campaign stops in Red Oak, Atlantic, and Audubon, and wrapped his tour of western Iowa in Carroll.
Rob Sand is currently Iowa’s State Auditor. Sand was first elected Iowa State Auditor on November 6, 2018, defeating Republican incumbent Mary Mosiman. He became the first Democrat to win the state auditor’s office since 1964.
He was reelected to a second term on November 8, 2022, narrowly defeating Republican Todd Halbur.
