(Atlantic) The Atlantic Public Library is partnering with libraries in Anita and Griswold to assemble personal hygiene kits that will be distributed to individuals in their communities.
The effort is made possible through the Day of Service Training & Implementation Fund, a program coordinated by Volunteer Iowa and funded through AmeriCorps. The grant program is designed to help local nonprofits and government organizations build volunteer capacity through training, strategic volunteer management plans, and collaboration with other organizations.
Atlantic Library Director Michelle Andersen said the effort is intended to provide a discreet way to help people who may unexpectedly find themselves in need of basic hygiene items while away from home.
The Atlantic Public Library plans to assemble three types of kits using travel-size or disposable items that can fit inside a small, zippered plastic bag.
The general hygiene kits will include a comb or brush, shampoo, soap, a washcloth or disposable body wipe, and deodorant. Feminine hygiene kits will contain a wrapped tampon, a wrapped pad, and a disposable wipe. Mouth care kits will include a toothbrush and toothpaste, floss, mouthwash, and mints.
Community members can support the project by donating cash, checks, or items for the kits by September 14.
Volunteers are also needed to help sort and pack the kits on Sept. 15 and 16. Those interested can sign up through the event registration on the library’s online calendar or by contacting the library.
The initiative is being coordinated by the public libraries in Atlantic, Anita, and Griswold, with each library collecting donations and assembling hygiene kits for its own community.
