Iowa HHS: 57 Cyclosporiasis Cases Confirmed In Iowa
(Des Moines, IA) — Almost 60 Iowans have been infected with cyclosporiasis so far this year. Iowa Health and Human Services says 57 cases have been reported, with 55 of those cases occuring after May 1. Forty-nine cases were reported in all of 2025. About half of this year’s cyclosporiasis cases have been linked to international travel. HHS says cases in Iowa have not been linked to the national outbreak or a specific food source. Cyclosporiasis is a parasitic infection that affects the small intestine and can cause explosive diarrhea.
CIWW Nitrate Removal Facility Has Run 183 Days So Far This Year
(Des Moines, IA) — The nitrate removal facility in Des Moines has run for 183 days so far this year. That surpasses the Central Iowa Water Works facility’s previous record of running for 177 days total in 2015. The facility processes water that exceeds the EPA’s nitrate standards. Last month, the utility says it was experiencing high nitrate levels in all three primary sources of water it uses to produce drinking water, including the Des Moines River and Raccoon River.
Memorial Highways Designated In Honor Of Fallen Iowa National Guard Members
(Des Moines, IA) — Two Iowa National Guard soldiers killed in the Middle East are being remembered with new Memorial Highway designations. Staff Sergeants Edgar Torres-Tovar of Des Moines and William Nathaniel Howard of Marshalltown were killed on December 13th of last year in Syria. The Iowa Department of Transportation says a portion of 63rd Street in Des Moines between Grand Avenue and Army Post Road is now dedicated to Torres-Tovar. A section of Highway 30 through Marshalltown has been dedicated in memory of Howard.
Corndog Kickoff Raises $850K For State Fairgrounds Improvements
(Des Moines, IA) — The Iowa State Fair Corndog Kickoff fundraiser raised more than 851-thousand dollars over the weekend. The money will help preserve and improve the Fairgrounds. More than 22-hundred people attended the event Saturday night. The kickoff included sampling of fair food, live and silent auctions, Sky Glider rides and fireworks. Since 1993, the Blue Ribbon Foundation has raised more than 210-million dollars for Fairgrounds restoration projects.
Pollard Says CyTown Groundbreaking Planned for September 2
(Ames, IA) — Iowa State Athletics Director Jamie Pollard [[PAH-lurd]] says a groundbreaking ceremony for part of the CyTown development is being planned for September 2nd. Pollard shared on X that he recently toured a prototype hotel for the project with Iowa State President Dr. David Cook and met with developers to discuss the next steps. Construction is already underway on a McFarland Clinic building, the first tenant in the planned entertainment district between Jack Trice Stadium and Hilton Coliseum.
Preparations Continue for RAGBRAI Opening Weekend
(Onawa, IA) — Preparations continue for this weekend’s opening of RAGBRAI [[ RAG-bry ]]. The week-long bicycle ride across the state starts Saturday in the Western Iowa town of Onawa [[ AHN-uh-wah ]]. Onawa’s three thousand residents are preparing to welcome an estimated 40-thousand people from all 50 U-S states and 40 countries for RAGBRAI’s opening weekend. The Register’s 53rd Annual Great Bike Ride Across Iowa will wrap up July 25 in Dubuque.
