(Hamburg) A Colombian national visiting the United States for the FIFA World Cup was arrested early Friday morning following a pursuit on Interstate 29 in Fremont County.
According to the Fremont County Sheriff’s Office, 33-year-old Nestor Morantes Segura, of Bogota, Colombia, was arrested on July 3 and charged with eluding, a serious misdemeanor.
Authorities say the incident began at approximately 1:25 a.m. when a Fremont County Sheriff’s Office K-9 deputy observed a 2026 Hyundai Elantra traveling southbound on Interstate 29 at 90 mph in a posted 70 mph zone.
Deputies attempted to initiate a traffic stop, but Segura allegedly failed to yield and continued southbound at a high rate of speed. The pursuit lasted approximately 10 miles before deputies successfully deployed a stop-stick tire deflation device, bringing the vehicle to a stop. Segura was taken into custody without further incident.
During questioning, Segura told deputies he was unable to hear the patrol vehicle’s siren and mistakenly believed drivers were not required to pull over if only emergency lights were activated.
Segura was transported to the Fremont County Jail and booked on charges related to excessive speeding and eluding law enforcement. He later posted a $1,000 cash bond and was released from custody.
The Sheriff’s Office noted that Segura’s release allowed him to continue his trip to Kansas City, where he watched the Colombian National Team defeat Ghana 1-0 to advance to the FIFA World Cup Round of 16.
