(Denison) The Iowa Governor’s Traffic Safety Bureau is partnering with area law enforcement officers for a “High Visibility Enforcement” Campaign. Iowa State Patrol Trooper and District #4 Public Information Officer Shelby McCreedy says the high visibility starts today (July 2) and runs through July 6.
Trooper McCreedy reminds motorists that this is a period of increased risk for dangerous driving behaviors and increased impairment. One year ago, there were five fatalities on the 4th of July.
According to the Iowa Department of Transportation’s latest Daily Fatality Report, dated Wednesday, July 1, 2026, Iowa has recorded 136 traffic fatalities so far this year, compared with 123 fatalities at the same point in 2025.
These statistics represent an increase of 13 traffic deaths, or approximately 10.6 percent, over the same period last year. The Iowa DOT notes that these figures are preliminary, as fatal crash investigations may take time to complete and the totals can change as additional information becomes available.
For perspective, Iowa ended 2025 with 259 traffic fatalities, the lowest annual total ever recorded in the state’s history.
