(Des Moines) Beginning today, a new Iowa law increases the speed limit from 55 mph to 60 mph on many rural paved roads across the state.
Iowa State Patrol Trooper and District 4 Public Information Officer Shelby McCreedy says the new law raises the speed limit from 55 to 60 miles per hour on roadways where state law does not already establish a different speed limit. Roads that already have higher posted limits—including interstate highways, four-lane highways, and other designated roadways—are not affected by the change.
McCreedy says the Iowa Department of Transportation will replace approximately 1,800 speed limit signs on state highways, changing them from 55 mph to 60 mph, at an estimated cost of $270,000.
In addition, Iowa’s 99 counties will replace about 3,465 speed limit signs on county roads at a combined cost of approximately $383,000.
Officials remind motorists to continue following posted speed limits, as some roads will remain at 55 mph and sign replacements will take time to complete.
