(Omaha) Oklahoma captured its third Men’s College World Series national championship Monday night, rolling past North Carolina 13-2 in Omaha, Nebraska.
The title marks a milestone for head coach Skip Johnson, who secured his first national championship in his ninth season leading the Sooners. The victory came during Oklahoma’s second appearance in the MCWS finals under Johnson. The Sooners fell short in their previous championship-series appearance, losing to Ole Miss in the 2024 finals.
The 2026 crown adds to Oklahoma’s previous national championships won in 1951 and 1994.
North Carolina’s search for its first national title continues. The Tar Heels have now lost three MCWS championship series over the past 20 seasons, including back-to-back defeats against Oregon State in 2006 and 2007. Despite making 13 Men’s College World Series appearances, UNC has never claimed the national championship.
Oklahoma’s offense overwhelmed the Tar Heels from the start. Second baseman Kyle Branch led the attack, going 3-for-4 with a home run and six RBIs. Shortstop Jaxon Willits also finished 3-for-4, while Brendan Brock, Dasan Harris and Dayton Tockey each recorded two hits.
On the mound, freshman LJ Mercurius delivered a standout relief performance after replacing starter Nick Wesloski. Mercurius allowed just one run on four hits across 5 2/3 innings while striking out five to help secure the championship victory.
