(Red Oak) An officer-involved shooting is under investigation in Red Oak.
On Wednesday, June 17, at approximately 7:54 p.m., officers with the Red Oak Police Department were dispatched to 905 Highland Avenue in Red Oak for a reported welfare check.
Upon arrival, officers made contact with the sole occupant of the residence. During the encounter, the individual exited the residence and fired multiple rounds from a handgun in the direction of a Red Oak Police Officer who was positioned a short distance away.
The suspect then raised the handgun in an apparent attempt to fire additional shots at the officer. In response to the immediate and ongoing threat, a Red Oak Police Officer discharged his service weapon, striking the suspect and stopping the threat.
The suspect was provided emergency medical treatment at the scene by personnel from the Red Oak Fire Department. The individual was subsequently transported to Montgomery County Memorial Hospital and later airlifted to the University of Nebraska Medical Center for further treatment. As of the latest update, the suspect is reported to be in stable condition.
The identities of the involved officer and the suspect are not being released at this time due to the ongoing investigation. Additional information will be released as it becomes available and as permitted by law.
The incident remains under investigation by the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation. The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office assisted the Red Oak Police Department at the scene.
