(Lewis) Memorial Day weekend kicks off a busy time of year for lakes around the state.
Iowa Department of Natural Resources Fisheries Biologist John Lorenzen reminds boat owners to clean, drain, and dry their boats and equipment before going to another lake. Lorenzen says the DNR fights aquatic invasive species throughout the year and does not want to see invasive plants and animals spread to where they do not belong.
Lorenzen’s movement of invasive species is detrimental enough that it has been made illegal to possess or transport prohibited aquatic invasive species.
Lorenzen says it is also illegal to transport any aquatic plants on water-related equipment or to transport boats with the plug still in the boat.
