Extradition Hearing For Iowa City Shooter Moved To Wednesday
(Atlanta, GA) — The Cedar Rapids teen facing five counts of attempted murder in connection with an Iowa City shooting last month will appear in a Georgia courtroom today. An extradition hearing for 17-year-old Damarian Jones, reportedly scheduled for Tuesday, will take place today. Clayton County court officials say they don’t schedule first appearances on Tuesdays. Jones was apprehended in a suburban Atlanta hotel on Monday by U.S. Marshals following a tip. Prosecutors say Jones injured five people when he fired into a crowd during a fight outside a bar on the Ped Mall in Iowa City. Police say they still expect more suspects to be arrested and charged in connection with the shooting.
Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds Signs Bill Making Animal Torture A Felony Into Law
(Des Moines, IA) — A bill making first-offense animal torture a felony in Iowa is now law. Governor Kim Reynolds signed the legislation on Monday. The new law maintains the current punishment of an aggravated misdemeanor for certain abuse cases, but now includes a more severe punishment of up to five years in prison and a fine between a thousand and ten thousand dollars for anyone found to have intentionally tortured a pet. Iowa was the only state in the nation where first-offense animal torture wasn’t a felony.
More Than 100 Iowa National Guard Soldiers Return Home This Week
(Des Moines, IA ) — More than 100 Iowa National Guard soldiers are expected to return home this week. The Iowa National Guard says 109 service members with the 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 34th Infantry Division, will arrive at the Des Moines International Airport on Friday. The soldiers were deployed in support of Operation Inherent Resolve. Officials note the service members may return on multiple flights throughout the day.
Johnston To Be Global Headquarters For Seed Company
(Johnston, IA) — Johnston has been selected as the global headquarters for Corteva’s seed spinoff, Vylor. Vylor will be located in Corteva’s existing Johnston campus. The next-generation seed genetics and biotechnology company is expected to add 200 executive jobs. Corteva has its roots in Pioneer Seed Company, which is also located in Johnston.

The study by Coworking Cafe examined factors such as employment opportunities, income levels, school quality, and access to health care. Des Moines ranked first nationally for employer-based health care coverage and topped the study for childcare affordability. Portland, Maine, ranked first overall.
