(Pottawattamie Co.) The Pottawattamie County Board of Supervisors on Tuesday approved an Artificial Intelligence (AI) policy.
David Bayer, Chief Information Officer, said the policy is intended to put guardrails on AI use. He explained that it was developed by the AI Committee, reviewed by the County Attorney and the Policy Committee, and then brought before the supervisors for approval.
Bayer said the policy includes three tiers.
The policy also addresses training requirements for all users and emphasizes that a human should always be involved in any AI process. It further outlines when the use of AI must be disclosed.
Supervisor Tim Wichman asked Bayer how they are going to police the use of AI.
Bayer said employees will have to sign off indicating they have completed the training, and that it will be taken seriously. The training will cover how to use AI, what to look for, which tier they need to be in, and how to document their usage. The committee will also work on ideas for how AI can be used to improve efficiency within the county.
