Vance was originally scheduled to appear with Nunn at Iowa State University at a Turning Point USA event, which was canceled due to scheduling conflicts. The visit has been rescheduled for this fall.
75 Residents Displaced After Apartment Building Fire In Des Moines
(Des Moines, IA) — About 75 people are displaced after an apartment building fire in Des Moines. Fire crews responded to the fire on East Caulder Avenue at about 4:15 p.m. Monday to find heavy smoke. Investigators say about 30 apartments were affected. The Red Cross has opened a shelter for impacted residents in the gym of the old Des Moines University campus on Grand Avenue. The shelter is staffed with volunteers ready to help those affected until they’re able to find more permanent housing.

The Iowa Association of Business and Industry says voters narrowed down the finalists to a tornado shelter and gun safe produced by Ironclad Shelter Solutions, a portable power station by Mi-T-M [[ MY-tee-EMM ]] Corporation, a window installation system from Pella Windows and Doors, and a blasthole drill by Weiler. The public will be able to vote for their favorite product starting tomorrow, and the winner will be announced June 3rd.
Some Beagles Rescued From A Wisconsin Breeding Farm Are Heading To Iowa
(Des Moines, IA) — Beagles rescued from a breeding farm near Madison, Wisconsin include a large number being brought to Iowa by the Animal Rescue League. The ARL has started a fundraiser to help care for the dogs. Another group of the Beagles were flown by volunteer pilots to a shelter in New Jersey this weekend. Animal activists have staged several large-scale protests at the farm, with several people arrested trying to free the dogs. More than 15-hundred dogs are being moved to shelters across the nation.

(Iowa) — A national study ranks Iowa 20th for being among the best states to be a police officer. WalletHub looked at 30 factors to decide the best and worst states to be police officers, including compensation, state and local spending on police protection and the number of officer deaths per capita. Iowa ranked high for job hazards and protection. Illinois is ranked the third-best state to be a police officer, in part because it has the highest median wage at over 101-thousand dollars a year.
