(Atlantic, IA) — It was a gorgeous Tuesday night for track and field as CAM hosted their Classic Relays event at Atlantic High School and there were quite a number of great performances and events.
In the 100 Hurdles, there were three Drake Relays qualifiers competing and Lana Alley of Fremont Mills won easily with a time of 14.72 seconds which is a new season PR. Ada Hansen of CAM was 2nd at 15.40 and Rylee Hemmingsen of Treynor was third at 15.93. Alley now has the 5th fastest time in the state and fastest time in Class 1A. Hansen has the third fastest time in 1A while Hemmingsen has the 2nd fastest time in 2A. Alley had the biggest night of anybody with 4 first place finishes with the Shuttle Hurdle, Sprint Medley, and 4×100.
The 400 Hurdles was supposed to be the first dual of the season between Hansen and Bella Lamp of AHSTW but Lamp pulled up on the front straight away with an injury but still managed to finish in third place. Hansen won at 1:04.23 with Carlie Nuckolls of Fremont Mills in 2nd at 1:08.29.
In the sprint medley relay, Hansen ran anchor for CAM and Nuckolls was anchor for Fremont Mills. Hansen had to make up a huge deficit on her 400 leg when she got the baton, caught Nuckrolls on the third turn but could not make the pass. Nuckrolls had a little left on the front straight away to hold off Hansen for the win. The Knights got a season PR by almost 5 seconds (1:51.63).
Fremont Mills behind Alley and Nuckolls won the girls meet with 142 points; Treynor 2nd with 126; CAM 3rd with 92; Woodbine 4th (84); AHSTW 5th (80); Coon Rapids Bayard 6th (77); Exira EHK 7th (55); Atlantic JV 8th (17); Audubon 9th (14); and Paton Churdan 10th (9). Woodbine won the boys meets with 174 points with CAM in 2nd place with 111 followed by AHSTW 3rd (105.5); Fremont Mills 4th (90); Paton Churdan 5th (68); Atlantic JV 6th (49.5); Exira EHK 7th (37); Audubon 8th (30) and Coon Rapids Bayard 9th (26).
On the boys side, there must be something in Atlantic that makes Trevon Keely of Paton Churdan comfortable. Keely won a dual with Landon Blum of Woodbine with a jump of 6 feet, 9 inches which is a new overall PR. It breaks the 6-08 he jumped to win state last year. Also last year in this meet, Keely jumped 6-07 which was a PR at the time. He tried three times at 6-10 but could not get it. Blum was 2nd at 6-02 but won the long jump.
The boys 4×100 was a close finish with Woodbine edging out CAM by 4/100 of a second — 44.79 to 44.83. Collin Bower of CAM was a three time winner for the Cougars in the 110 Hurdles (16.08) and part of the D-Med and Sprint Medley relays.
Collin Harder of AHSTW was a three time winner in the 400 (51.00) and 800 (2:00.93) — he will run in the 800 at the Drake Relays on Thursday — and was part of the 4×400 relay that won with Jackson Jensen, Evan Harder and Chase Wheatley (3:40.46)
