(Guthrie Center, IA) — The Raccoon River Valley Trail will get some upgrades in the future. At Tuesday’s Guthrie Board of Supervisors meeting, Brad Halterman of the Guthrie County Conservation said that the joint project with Greene County will get $1.2 million in state money, specifically from the Iowa Transportation Commission. There is a caveat however — Halterman says the money will not be available for another three years
Halterman says the delay is because they are not shovel ready for the trail project and the conservation board needed to explore federal grants and other sources of fundraising. Halterman says an engineering firm has been hired with funds that have already been saved. Halterman now says the hard part — funding the project — seems to be complete
Halterman says with this project and others that connect with it, the Raccoom Valley trail will be the most consecutive miles of recreational trail in the United States.
