Sherry was born on October 13, 1961, to Janice and Kenneth Lehman of Guthrie Center, Iowa. She attended Guthrie Center schools and graduated in 1980. Upon graduation, she worked at a 4-Sons convenience store, where she met the love of her life, Daryl Gettler. They were married on June 6, 1981, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Adair. To this union, they were blessed with the birth of Curtis Daryl in 1986 and Shannon Lynne in 1988.
Sherry enjoyed keeping busy and being productive. She helped deliver meals and transported the elderly to and from the Adair Meal Site and also for outings in the surrounding area for six years. She attended classes to become an EMT for the Adair Fire Department and worked in this capacity for several years. She worked as a proofreader at the Clarinda Company in Atlantic, IA, for 16 years. Upon this company’s closure, she worked at American Equity Investment Life Insurance Company for 12 years in the Annuity Follow-Up Department. During these years, she also owned and operated Sherry’s Cleaning Service, cleaning in her spare time and running the books for over 30 years.
During these years, she also held a part-time job, which she transitioned into full-time at the Casey General Store in Adair, IA. She was employed by Casey’s for 28 years. Even though Sherry’s family wanted her to retire due to her health, she refused. She wanted to work to keep her mind busy and enjoyed her work, family, and seeing customers.
Sherry enjoyed spending time with family, going on vacations, and relaxing in a hot tub. A few vacations she took with her family included trips to Colorado, Hawaii, Arizona, Cancun, Disney World, Mexico, and Puerto Vallarta. They also took a 25th-anniversary cruise to St. Maarten and surrounding areas.
Sherry had a soft spot for cats; Tiger, Molly, Muffy, and Socks were some of her dearest companions over the years. Sherry loved baking cookies and candy at Christmas time and shared her plates of sweetest treats with family and friends. Sherry was proud of her grandchildren and attended most of the area activities in which the children participated.
Sherry and Daryl were members of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Adair until it closed and are current members of Glori Dei Lutheran Church in Urbandale. Sherry’s faith in her Lord and Savior never wavered even through trying times of physical health, suffering from hip and knee surgeries and then Huntington’s disease. She was strong, stubborn, courageous, and resilient in her health battles and always came out on the other side until Huntington took her life.
The loves of her life survive Sherry: her husband Daryl, her children Curtis (Katie) Gettler and Shannon (Jeff) Lee, and grandchildren Shyanne and Savannah Lee and Carsen and Ember Gettler. A host of family and friends also survives Sherry. She will be missed desperately by her loving family, but they know they will see her again someday in heaven.
