(Atlantic) Atlantic scored 12 runs on 11 hits, sending 17 batters to the plate in the bottom of the third inning, and defeated Lewis Central 17-7 in a Hawkeye Ten Conference softball game at Atlantic on Thursday night.
Lewis Central opened the game in the top of the first, scoring four runs on five hits. Kyleigh Moore stroked a single, and Alyssa Griffin belted a single, driving home Moore. Haylee Wilcox’s RBI double and RBI singles from Madison Johnette and Emerson Coziahr followed with a 4-0 lead.
Atlantic pitcher Riley Wood settled in and retired eight straight hitters, and the Trojans’ offense kicked in with one run in the second inning, followed by the landslide in the bottom of the third with 12 runs on 11 hits and a 13-4 lead. Lila Wiederstein, Class 3A’s, hit leader with 36, hit a single and drilled a two-run homer to lead the Trojans. Riley Wood cleared the bases with a three RBI triple and freshman Jillian Saathoff smacked an RBI double and laced a single to lead the home team.
The Titans made a great effort to get back into the game in the top of the fifth with three runs on two hits. Cami Damgaard reached on an error, and Alyssa Griffin and Haylee Wilcox hit singles for the visitors, closing the gap to 13-7.
Atlantic geared up again in the bottom of the fifth and polished off the game with four runs on three hits. Wiederstein, Saathoff, and Schroeder belted the three hits for the Trojans.
Schroeder finished the night 4-5 at the plate. Wiederstein went 4-5 with a double and a two-run homer. Saathoff was 3-4 with two RBI, and Claire Pellett finished the night with two hits in four plate appearances. Riley Wood drilled a three RBI triple. Zoey Kirchhoff, Peyton McLaren, and Adler Bruce each hit singles.
For Lewis Central, Alyssa Griffin, Haylee Wilcox, and Emerson Coziahr finished the game with two hits each. Wilcox had an RBI double in the first inning. Madison, Johnette, and Kyleigh Moore each hit singles.
Atlantic (12-5) travels to Creston for a two-day tournament on Friday and Saturday. Lewis Central, (6-9), plays Kuemper in a doubleheader on Tuesday, June 11.
