(St. Paul, MN) – With a game that was all offense, the Iowa Cubs weren’t able to keep the runs going as they ended up falling to the St. Paul Saints 13-11. This game featured nine different pitchers between the two teams combined.
The big inning for the Saints came in the bottom of the third. While the Saints already led 2-0 coming into the third inning, they packed on the runs. Yunior Severino came up to the plate with two runners on base and was able to launch a home run to push the Saints to a 5-0 lead. Coming up to the plate once again was Alex Isola who got on base and reached second. Yoyner Fajardo was able to hit a ground ball down the third base line and scored Isola to bring the Saints up 6-0. This was followed by two singles of Dalton Shuffield and Diego A. Castillo who helped to bring in two more runs and put the Saints at an 8-0 lead going into the fourth inning. They eventually were able to add on runs in every inning but the seventh and eighth to take a win over the Cubbies.
Leading on the day for the Saints was Diego Castillo who went 4-5 with two RBIs while scoring three runs. Chris Williams also had an impressive day at the plate while going 3-5 with two RBIs followed by Tanner Morris who hit 3-5 alongside Williams. For the Cubs, they were led by Luis Vazquez who went 3-4 at the plate while scoring two runs. He was followed by Hill, Wisdom, Canario, and Strumpf who all earned two hits at the plate and combined for five RBIs.
Earning the win in the ballgame was Hobie Harris who pitched in 1.1 innings while allowing four earned runs and walked one batter. Ronny Henriquez earned the save while pitching in two innings and earned two strikeouts. Sam McWilliams earned the loss on the day while starting and pitching in 2.2 innings. The Florida native gave up seven earned runs and two home runs.
The Iowa Cubs will have Monday off and resume Tuesday at home against Louisville to celebrate Jackie Robinson Day.
