(Iowa City, IA) – Iowa Hawkeye Tennis junior Marisa Schmidt has been named the Big Ten Player of the Week. The Germany native had a more than spectacular weekend, going 2-0 in singles against #34 Illinois and #35 Northwestern.
This Big Ten honor marks the first ever for Schmidt in her Hawkeye career. She won both matches in straight sets, defeating Justine Leong 6-0 and 6-2 on Sunday. During the weekend, Schmidt had a bout with Illinois’ Mckenna Schaefbauer 6-3 and 7-6 to help carry Iowa’s 4-2 victory.
Schmidt had a team-best 10-4 singles record during the spring, which also includes a 9-0 mark while being the #2 singles player for Iowa. This honor not only marks the first for Schmidt but also the first for Iowa since Alexa Noel in 2021.
Iowa hits the court once again on Friday, March 29th when they battle 329 Wisconsin at 4:00 p.m. in Madison.
