(Audubon, IA)- The girls’ track and field team for the Audubon Wheelers has continued to get better throughout the season and Coach Laeni Christensen couldn’t be prouder of her girls. The team had a strong finish at the Bob Clark Relays taking fifth place but had major improvements in select events. Addie Hocker would take second in the discus throw while multiple relay teams would better their times and take 1st place including the Distance Medley, Sprint Medley, and 4x400m teams.
With the season ending in a few weeks, there’s still plenty of time for the team to get even better than they are already as they continue to make strides towards the postseason. Not only do the girls have plenty of preparation to make but so does Coach Christensen. The bump up to 2A this year for the squad throws a bit of wrench into the plans for the district meet for the Wheelers so Christensen has to try to find the lineups that give the girls the best chance at success and the next few meets will look to help solidify her decisions or make them harder.
Just last night the Wheelers had another meet where they had a successful evening including some top finishes from individuals and relay teams. Audubon would almost sweep the relay events as they take first in the 4x100m, 4x200m, 4x400m, 4x800m, and the Sprint Medley with a runner up finish in the Distance Medley. Addie Hocker would once again take second in the discus throw, Jaelynn Peterson leaped for a second place finish in the high jump, and Taryn Peterson would win the 200m dash on the way to a 3rd Place team score.
There have been plenty of improvements in times this season, which can always be measured, but one big takeaway for Christensen is how the girls have come together as a group in their relays.
A coach can always have high goals for her athletes to achieve but it is when the athletes give themselves lofty goals that truly matters. As the Wheelers continue to cut their times and build cohesiveness as a team, there is still plenty of work to be done before the district meet on Thursday, May 9th in Treynor.
The next meet for the Audubon girls to improve comes is the Western Iowa Conference meet next Tuesday, April 30th in Tri-Center beginning at 4pm.
