(Anita, IA) – From the opening tipoff to the end of the game, the (21-2) CAM Cougars led the whole way in Friday night’s 71-34 win over (13-11) Wayne. Just at the end of the first quarter alone, the Cougars led 29-6 as the press was creating turnover after turnover in CAM’s favor. Senior Meredith Rich said that the press helped to fuel the fire for her and her teammates early in the game.
Wayne came out onto the floor before the tipoff with a ton of confidence sitting on their shoulders, but CAM swiped that confidence right off their shoulders and took it to the hoop.
The Cougars were led on the night by the KSOM player of the game Eva Steffensen with 23 points, 12 of which came in the second half of action for the senior. Right alongside her was Kiera Nichols with a total of 19 points on the night, and she wants to keep this postseason run going for her and her teammates as this game is just a step forward.
The seniors also continued to lead in scoring down the line as Meredith Rich came just right behind Nichols with 12 points on the night while Carley Dennis backed up with five points, all in the first half of action. These seniors continue to create opportunities, and those opportunities continue to lead to wins on the board.
Finishing off the night for CAM was Courtney Follman with five points, Ada Hansen with three points, and Emma Follman finished with two.
For Wayne, they were led in scoring by freshman Brystal Peck as she had 16 points on the night, eight in each half. Clara O’Brien knocked down seven points which all came in the first half of action. Courtney Knutson had four points on the night for the Falcons. Laney Harvey, Ava Whitney, and Natalia Brown all finished with two points while Ella Whitney scored a point.
These CAM seniors are picking up their conditioning and want this postseason run more than anybody else.
CAM will look ahead to next Wednesday when they take on Montezuma in Norwalk for the Regional Championship game for one of their toughest competitions all year.
The Cougars will take the next few days to prepare for a tough Montezuma team that sits at 19-4 overall.
