(Elk Horn, IA) – The Exira-EHK girls’ basketball team started off their season with a tough game right off the bat against #5 Woodbine. They may have lost in the game to the Tigers 58-50, but with the first game of the season, head coach Tom Petersen was proud of his girls for the effort that they gave in the competition overall.
The Spartans were led by Taryn Petersen in the game against Woodbine, but her effort cannot be enough in games for the Spartans this season. This is a group of girls who play hard in every single game and have been preparing in practice up to their game tonight against Boyer Valley.
This is a Spartans team that needs to improve on the defensive side of the floor. The offense was productive in their game against Woodbine, but the defense was what got them out of the game. If the defense can hold up, so can the Spartans with a win.
Exira-EHK is taking on the Boyer Valley Bulldogs after beating them twice last season and 61-18 in the last competition in January. Coach Petersen realizes that this is a different Boyer Valley team, just as he has a different Exira-EHK team. He wants his girls to continue to figure out the floor while not playing down to the competition. Boyer Valley has three girls that average 7.5 points through two games this season including Morgan Hast, Mariah Falkena, and Sylvia Sullivan who will give Exira-EHK a run for their money.
The Spartans take on the Bulldogs tonight at 6:00 in a doubleheader. KSOM will be exclusively live-streaming on Western Iowa Today TV powered by Nishnanet with Zach Collins and Austin West on the call, with a pregame show at 5:40 p.m.
