(Avoca, IA) – The AHSTW girl’s basketball team earned their first win of the season after they beat Riverside 47-35. AHSTW has now beaten Riverside in the past two seasons and is 3-0 in the last three games to the Bulldogs.
The Bulldogs started off the game with a 4-0 lead early, but AHSTW continued to make shot after shot as they were able to go up 16-5 a the end of the first quarter. After a battle back and forth, the Bulldogs started to climb their way back in as they got within five points a few minutes around halftime. After halftime, it was all Lady Vikes basketball as they were able to continue driving down and scoring.
The key to AHSTW’s success wasn’t just their offense, but rather their defense. AHSTW continued to place four players in the box on all corners that protected so well with zone coverage that they never allowed Riverside to even drive into the lane. This is one team to watch out for this season in terms of their defensive ability to play reluctantly and quickly this season.
Based upon our stats, the leading scorer for AHSTW was Halle Goodman, who splashed four threes and also earned a bucket from short range for a total of 14 points on the night. Delaney Goshorn was a low post monster as she controlled the lower baseline on both offense and defense and earned eight points on the night. Rylie Knop may not have scored a lot from the floor but was a player who stood out defensively for multiple steals and never backed down. On the opposite end, Sophia Taylor led the Bulldogs in scoring with 11 points while also keeping the ball in motion all game long.
The AHSTW Lady Vikes will take on Underwood on December 1st at 6:00 while the Riverside Bulldogs will take on IKM-Manning on December 1st at 6:00.
