(Glenwood) Glenwood held off Atlantic’s second-half rally in a Class 3A Substate Quarterfinal on Tuesday at Glenwood and advanced to the Substate semi-finals with a 60-55 win.
The Rams opened with a 17-12 lead at the end of the first quarter, outscored the Trojans 15-2 in the second quarter, and had a 32-14 lead at the break. Glenwood Head Coach Curt Schulte credits his squad’s defense and rebounding efforts for the first-half run.
The Trojans came out the second half with a lot of fire and erased the 18-point deficit in the third quarter, outscoring the Rams 18-3. Nolan Waters knocked down back-to-back three-point shots, Colton Rasmussen found his rhythm with five points to add to Waters 11, and the visitors pulled within four at the end of the third quarter, 36-32. Atlantic Head Coach Derek Hall says he challenged his team during the halftime break.
Colton Rasmussen knocked down a three-point shot early in the fourth quarter to give the Trojans a 41-39 lead. After that, there were five ties and eight lead changes. Rasmussen scored 13 of his 20 points in the fourth quarter, and Jayden Proehl and Jackson McLaren each hit two key buckets.
Glenwood Head Coach Curt Schulte says he knew the Trojans would make a run eventually.
The Rams took the lead 54-52 late in the final frame and never trailed after that, mainly due to Caden Johnson’s nine-for-nine free throw shooting and two key three-point baskets to hold off the Trojans to win 60-55.
Johnson led the Rams with 22 points; Kayden Anderson, 9; Logyn Eckheart, 8; Gavin Schau, 7; Zach Kelsey, 5; Risto Lappala, 3; and Payton Longmeyer, Casey Godbout, and Adam Severn each pitched in two points.
Colton Rasmussen led Atlantic with 20 points, Nolan Waters 14, Jackson McLaren 8, Carter Pellett 6, Jayden Proehl 4, and Caden Andersen 6.
