(State) Iowa’s deer harvest figure is making a run at 100,000. After the first and second shotgun seasons, there were 93,000 deer harvested.
“The late muzzleloader hunters are at it now. That season goes until January 10th. If you look at past history, we roughly have about 25,000 late muzzleloader hunters in the state, and they account for 10% of the overall. So 10% is another 10,000 deer which would put us over that 100,000 mark.”
Bryan Hayes with the Iowa DNR Office in Lewis says the frigid conditions are a welcome site for the late muzzleloader hunters. “They like the cold because that forces the deer into moving. The deer are going to have to get to those food sources to maintain energy to get through these cold temperatures that we are having.”
Bow hunting season remains open until January 10th.
