(Lewis) Extension Agronomist for southwest Iowa Aaron Saeugling sat through many discussions on the lack of subsoil moisture this spring. He says the truth is; the region is in better shape than one year ago.
Sauegling says 2020 was a record-breaking crop year with an abnormally dry spring and a July providing just enough moisture to produce a crop. He says the current crop year shows adequate subsoil moisture based on good October rains over four inches.
Saeugling says the amount of moisture received this month will more than makeup for the dry winter. He says no one knows what the future holds, but we are in a better place now for subsoil moisture than in past springs.
