(Des Moines, IA) — The Iowa DNR reports 36 deer taken during the 2021-2022 hunting season tested positive for chronic wasting disease. Samples from nearly five-thousand deer were tested for CWD. DNR wildlife biologist Tyler Harms said, “hunters are key to our monitoring effort, and we are grateful for their assistance. We hit our quotas in almost every area of the state, which is good.” Officials focused surveillance on older bucks to increase the likelihood of finding the disease if it is present in the area. Hunters can still participate in select deer management zones through Sunday.
