(Villisca) The Villisca Fire Department responded to a house fire early Thursday morning at 102 E 1st Street.
Villisca Fire Chief John Bruce says the call went out at 6:31 a.m. Arriving firefighters reported heavy fire coming from the northeast room on the home’s upper level, and firefighters contained the blaze to the upstairs bedroom. Ground operations wrapped up at 9:02 a.m.
Chief Bruce says the bedroom sustained significant smoke and water damage. He says the remainder of the home also received considerable smoke and water damage but is repairable.
Bruce says the residents exited the house safely. Villisca Rescue treated a minor child for a burn and released the child to a parent. Fire rescue personnel escaped injury.
Chief Bruce says the fire started in the upstairs bedroom, possibly from an overloaded extension cord. The damage estimate is unavailable. The Red Cross assisted the family.
The following agencies provided mutual aid; Villisca Ambulance, Red Oak Rescue, Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office, Villisca Power Company, Villisca Public Works, and the Montgomery County EMA.
