(Des Moines) Severe weather dumped hail in at least two locations in southwest Iowa Friday morning.
The National Weather Service issued a severe thunderstorm warning in Harrison, Union, Adams, and Adair Counties.
Trained weather spotters reported 1.00-inch hail five miles west of Portsmouth at 2:32 a.m. in Harrison County and 1.75-inch hail five miles southeast of Fontanelle at around 8:15 a.m. The stones ranged from golf ball size to mostly quarter size stones. The stones covered the ground with no wind.
Thunderstorms are forecast at times today through tonight. There is a potential for severe weather at times, especially over the southern half or so of Iowa from mid-afternoon through this evening when all modes of severe weather may be possible, including damaging winds, huge hail, and even tornadoes. Locally heavy rainfall is also expected, especially south of Interstate 80.
The forecast calls for periodic chances for thunderstorms to remain in the forecast from Saturday into next week; however, the threat of severe weather appears low at this time.
