(Des Moines) An extensive low-pressure system churning in Canada is currently producing shots of bitterly cold air into the state’s Midwest region. The Polar Vortex has been stationary, causing temperatures to plummet to below zero over the past week. But there is some good news on the horizon.
“Once we get through this bitterly cold weekend, we will warm up a little bit,” said Allan Curtis, Meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Des Moines. “Temperatures will still be below normal with highs in the teens and lower 20’s. It’s a step in the right direction, and at this point, I think we will all take it.”
Allan Curtis with the National Weather Service in Des Moines says temperature should moderate into the teens starting on Wednesday, and some areas of the state may be lucky enough to get into the low 20’s.
“It’s still going to winter and it’s still going to be cold, but we may even be talking about a high of 32-degrees as we get to the third week in February,” said Curtis.
Until then, stay bundled up. The high will reach the single digits and below zero at night through Saturday. Sunday will be brutal. The high temperature is forecast to be four-below zero, with a low of 18-below at night. Monday’s high will be one-above zero with a low of 13-below.
