(Anita) Funeral services for Anita Mayor Thomas R. Harris, age 61, will be held Saturday at 11:00 a.m. at Zion Lutheran Church in Atlantic. Harris passed away Sunday, January 24th.
Anita City Councilman Kevin Littleton said Anita is going to miss Harris’ efficiency in the job as Mayor. He said Harris’ military training made him see what needed to be done and get it done now. “His job as mayor, he was technically very good at the job,” said Littleton. “He really did good job, he stayed on top of things, he worked at it like a full time job, he literally lived on the computer, he checked out grants.”
Tom Harris attended Iowa State University after high school. After one year, he began working with his father building bridges until he entered the military in 1988, joining the Army. Upon discharge from the Army in 1991, Tom joined the Iowa National Guard. Tom served tours in Korea, returned stateside during Desert Storm, and served a tour in Iraq during Operation Iraqi Freedom from 2005-2006. Tom was medically retired from the Iowa Army National Guard on April 7, 2013, which also served as his final pinning ceremony. He ended his career with our armed forces as Sergeant Major Thomas Harris. In his retirement, Tom enjoyed spending time with family, gardening, hunting and trapping. Tom Harris served on the Anita City Council and was serving as Mayor of the City of Anita at the time of his death.
Visitation with family will be held prior to the funeral service at Saturday, starting at 10:00 a.m.
