(Avoca) The Atlantic volleyball team is off to a good start to the season. The Trojans won all three matches in the afternoon session of the AHSTW tourney on Saturday.
Coach Michelle Blake’s squad defeated Riverside, (21-14, 21-16), and followed up with a 21-7, 21-6 win over Council Bluffs, Thomas Jefferson, and downed Essex, (21-10, 21-8).
“You can’t be disappointed when your team leaves a tournament with three straight wins,” said Atlantic Head Coach Michelle Blake. “I am so proud of this team especially coming off of just one week of practice. I was also pleased with the effort of the younger players. Everyone did what I asked them to do.”
The Trojans knocked down 16 kills against Riverside, off the hands of six different players. Alyssa Derby and Abby Smith each had four. Derby led the way in the second set against Tee Jay. The senior knocked down four, and Caroline Pellett added three. Against Essex, Smith cleared seven kills and Derby finished with four.
“We dictated the tempo, and didn’t let anybody else dictate the way we played, “said Blake.
The Trojans cleared 25 ace serves on the day. Six against Riverside, 12 in the Tee Jay set, and seven against Essex.
“We served super aggressive, and when you do that we’re going to have some errors here and there, but we served well and hit the ball well,” said Blake.
Atlantic, (3-0), will compete in the ADM Tournament on Thursday, and host their own tournament on Saturday.
