(Exira) The Exira-EHK football team has some big shoes to fill from their 2019 team.
The Spartans and head coach Tom Petersen will open up the season next Friday at Audubon. Coach Petersen says, “We are trying to get an idea of where some of these kids are going to be at. We lost a lot of kids from a year ago so we are trying to get kids that don’t have a lot of experience some reps and getting them comfortable at different positions.”
The Spartans must replace Creighton Nelson who led the team in most offensive categories last year. There’s some talent waiting in the wings and how big of an impact they can make remains to be seen. “We’ll have to wait and see. We have some kids that I feel are pretty talented at different spots. Trey Petersen will fill in that role where Creighton was at. Hunter Andersen is back and Tyler Kingery has really stepped up.”
Exira-EHK has the luxury of bringing back a lot of experience at quarterback. Tyler Petersen enters the year in his 3rd season as a starter. It’s been about 7-8 years since they’ve had a signal caller with as many varsity reps as Petersen. “He did a really good job a sophomore. Last year I thought his mechanics kind of got away from him so that’s something we’ve been working on.”
Coach Petersen believes they’ll be in for a very tough league slate. He lists Coon Rapids-Bayard, Audubon, and Woodbine as teams that will all be very strong.
