The National Weather Service in Des Moines says a moderate to heavy spring snow storm will impact central to southern Iowa Thursday into Thursday evening. A heavy band of snow is forecast to set up across southern portions of Iowa, generally along and south of the Highway 34 corridor to the Missouri border. A sharp cutoff of the accumulating snow to no-snow is anticipated and that looks to be located along the Interstate 80 corridor as north of this line likely to just see trace amounts. Winds range from 10 to 20 mph and may cause some visibility restrictions in the heaviest snow band.
Total snow accumulations of 3 to 9 inches anticipated with higher amounts in far southern Iowa. Isolated higher amounts possible. Travel could be very difficult. The hazardous conditions could impact the morning or evening commute. Plus, snow is likely to stick to power lines and trees leading to the potential for power outages.
