(Des Moines) The Iowa Department of Public Health confirmed a positive case of COVID-19 in a resident of Crawford County late Sunday afternoon. Officials say the individual is an adult 61-80 years old. No further information will be given about the case out of respect for the individual and the family.
Meanwhile, at Sunday’s press conference, Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds says as the state continues to increase its capacity for testing at the State Hygienic Lab and other labs, more tests are run daily, resulting in a higher number of positive and negative results.
As you look at the map provided by the Iowa Department of Public Health, the majority of the counties without positive tests, as you might expect, are located in the rural areas of the state. For example, 14 counties in the southern two-tiers have no positive tests, as well as the majority of the counties in western Iowa.
The Governor stated testing is being done in all 99 counties. Sarah Reisetter, Deputy Director of Iowa Public Health, says it should be every Iowan’s assumption the virus is circulating in their community.
Reisetter says positive case counts will climb; but they do expect to see the first peak in cases sometime in the next two-to-three weeks.
Johnson County reports the highest number of cases with 65, Polk County, 50, and Linn County reports 42. Four Iowans have died from the virus.
The first cases of the COVID-19 in Iowa were reported on March 8.
