(Guthrie Center) ACGC begins the softball season Monday at Woodward-Granger.
The Chargers will be led this season by new head coach Eric Van Meter. He outlines the expectations for the group. “I expect the girls to go out every night and compete and play hard to the last out and see where the season takes us. We have some returning girls, but are a relatively young group and lost a lot to graduation.”
The cupboard isn’t completely bare. “We bring back Reese Coffman at shortstop, a couple of outfield spots, Jorja Hoover at second base, and of course Mady Kelsey our catcher. We lost our corner infield, out pitcher, and centerfielder.”
Madyln Kelsey is coming off of a big sophomore season in which she hit .396 with four home runs and 27 RBI. Jorja Hoover hit .302 last year and was 2nd on the team in runs scored with 22. Practice has been good so far. “It’s been really good. We had a lot of things to get through with no winter hitting and we didn’t know who the coach would be. We had a lot to get through quickly and I feel like we are getting there and should be ready by the 15th.
With no seniors on the roster coach Van Meter says he’ll expect a lot from his seven juniors. They’ll play Woodward-Granger on Monday followed by dates against Madrid and Pleasantville.
