(Avoca) AHSTW has eight wrestlers qualified for the district tournament which gives them a chance to break a school record for total number of qualifiers in one season.
The Vikings are in action Saturday in Underwood with Hayden Fischer, Joel Sampson, Jaedan Rasmussen, Denver Pauley, Seth Kiesel, Gavyn Fischer, Leland Barr, and Brady Canada all in the mix. Coach Evan McCarthy doesn’t want his athletes to be satisfied with just qualifying for state. They want to make some noise in Des Moines, “The last couple of years I’ve been a little bit disappointed. We’ve had some pretty big smiles on our face at districts like we’ve accomplished the end all, be all goal. I’m hoping with this group we can get a good majority of them through and get them to believe that they can compete for a medal at the state tournament. The ultimate goal is to finish as high as you can on the podium and not just get there.”
Hayden Fischer, Joel Sampson, Gavyn Fischer, and Brady Canada are all past state qualifiers. Sampson is attempting to make the state tournament for a third time in his career. KSOM will have updates from Underwood. Wrestling starts at noon.
