(Atlantic) Cass County Attorney Vanessa Strazdas updated the Board of Supervisors on recent court activity at their meeting this morning.
Strazdas said there were a couple of noteworthy sentencing recently. Kelly Simonton got two (10-year) consecutive sentences for Sex Abuse 3rd Degree.
“That was a good win for us. His attorney was arguing that they should be concurrent, meaning running at the same time, and I argued that they should be consecutive and the judge took our side,” said Strazdas. “It was a pretty emotional day in the courtroom the day that happened because it was just a rough situation.”
Tyler Mills had a total of nine cases he pleaded guilty to. Some of the charges included Burglary 3rd, Stalking, Domestic Assault, and several counts of Violation of a No Contact Order. Mills was given a 5-year probation term.
“Hopefully that will put an end to a little reign of terror that young man has been on in our town and if not he’s got some prison time over his head, so I was happy with that outcome too,” stated Strazdas.
Strazdas said there are a couple more sex abuse cases that are likely to go to trial, both had dates set for October 29th so one of them will have to be moved, likely to December.
Strazdas also mentioned that charges were filed in the accidental shooting incident. She said that is in the works, but not resolved yet.
