(Lewis) Cold weather is forecast to move into the Midwest this weekend, and Iowa Department of Natural Resources Fisheries Biologist John Lorenzen says now is the time to check docks, boats, and equipment for invasive species before winter storage.
Lorenzen says invasive species, including zebra mussels and aquatic plants such as Eurasian watermilfoil, can negatively impact the quality of outdoor recreation.
Lorenzen says zebra mussels were first discovered in Lake Manawa in 2022. However, the DNR rarely encounters them.
Lorenzen reminds boaters to clean boats and equipment before leaving a body of water, drain all water from their equipment, and allow everything to dry completely before moving to another lake
