Iowa Farmers Behind Typical Harvest Progress
(Des Moines, IA) — It is harvest season in Iowa, but Iowa’s Secretary of Agriculture says farmers are a little behind this year. Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Mike Naig [[ NAG ]] says farmers are about two weeks behind on this year’s harvest progress, with about 14 percent of corn and about a third of beans having been harvested. He says on a typical year, over half of beans and about a third of the state’s corn crop would be harvested by now. Naig says weather is a factor in the delay, since the soil is so saturated that even slight rainfall can cause standing water and muddy conditions in fields across the state.
Iowa Getting More Than $24M To Expand, Modernize Truck Parking At I-80 Rest Areas
(Des Moines, IA) — Iowa is getting more than 24-million dollars from the U.S. DOT to expand and modernize truck parking at several rest areas on Interstate 80. The money will go toward six rest areas in Minden, Mitchellville, Underwood, Victor, and Wilton. The DOT says the improvements should free up a lot of time, with 40-percent of U.S. truckers spend an average of an hour every day looking for parking. Twelve other states are also getting funding for truck parking improvement projects.
Iowa Service Member Memorial Could Move from Iowa Capitol
(Des Moines, IA) — A memorial honoring nearly 100 Iowa service members who died in the line of duty could soon leave the Iowa Capitol rotunda. Brigadier General William McClintock told the Iowa Commission of Veterans Affairs the display is being moved to make room for a new exhibit honoring current and former Iowa governors. He says other suggested Capitol locations are not large enough to accommodate the memorial. The commission is now considering moving it to the Gold Star Military Museum. The memorial was created to honor Iowa service members killed in the line of duty since 9/11.
