(Corning) A lot is on the line this Friday for Southwest Valley and Mount Ayr, with a third-seed playoff spot in Class A District #7 at stake.
The Timberwolves were shut out of the playoffs last season, finishing 3-5. They head into Friday’s home game with a 4-3 record.
Southwest Valley Head Coach Keegan Longabaugh says the program has a different atmosphere this season. He says they have achieved more success, and the players came back to work on despite last week’s loss to West Monona.
Longabaugh admits the team is more experienced than last season, with some key pieces in the offensive backfield for the last three years, including Wyatt Shires and Walker Bissell. Shires, a dual-threat quarterback, has thrown for 666 yards and rushed for 485 yards. Bissell has 67 carries for 309 yards.
Coach Longabaugh admits Mount Ayr will be a challenge with their speed. The Raiders are run-dominant, with 1,898 rushing yards to 360 passing. Dyson Thompson is a dynamic ball carrier with 891 yards, a 7.7-yard-per-carry average, and four touchdowns.
Longabaugh admits Mount Ayr is a program that always seems to reload.
Coach Longabaugh says they want to be one of those teams with a defense that bends but does not break. The Timberwolves have a balanced attack, with 715 passing yards and 1,011 rushing yards.
The kickoff is at 7:00 p.m. at Southwest Valley.
